Acanthosis Nigricans
Acanthosis Nigricans is a skin disorder characterized by abnormally increased coloration and "velvety" thickening of the skin, particularly of skin fold regions, such as of the neck and groin and under the arms. It is believed that this condition is associated with diabetes. The Acanthosis Nigricans screenings take place in 3rd, 5th and 7th grade. Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a condition that involves larger spinal curves, greater than 10 degrees. Scoliosis is most common in young people, especially girls between the ages of 10 and 16. Scoliosis is most serious in young children who are still growing. Therefore, screening a child for scoliosis may be important so that any deformity can be detected early and treated before it becomes severe. Scoliosis screenings take place in 6th and 9th grades.
Hearing and Vision
Hearing and vision screenings take place at all grade levels. Referrals for medical treatment will be made if needed.
Pediculosis and Other Scalp Conditions
Pediculosis and Other Scalp Conditions Pediculosis (lice) screenings are conducted at both the elementary and the secondary level. Students determined to have head lice shall not be allowed to attend school until they are under treatment. Following shampoo treatment at home, students shall be examined by the school nurse, and if approved, shall be readmitted.
Only one full day’s absence is permitted for treatment. Students that are free of lice, but continue to have nits would be re-admitted to the classroom. Student are required to re-shampoo with medicated shampoo one week later.
