Texas Girls Coaching Association (Coaching School)

Course Description: The annual Summer Clinic sponsored by the TGCA is well-known throughout the United States and attracts nationally recognized volleyball, basketball, track & field, cheer, tennis, soccer, and softball clinicians. TGCA is certified by the Texas Education Agency to provide professional development lectures.  In conjunction with the annual Summer Clinic, two volleyball, basketball and softball All-Star games are played featuring 152 of the most outstanding incoming senior athletes in Texas. The clinic and All-Star games attract approximately 10,000 coaches, their families, and fans from Texas and surrounding states.

Kimbell Art Museum Summer Institute for Teachers

Target Audience: K-12 visual arts teachers

Course Description: Daily sessions will feature staff-led presentations, gallery discussions, and studio-art activities showcasing the variety of cultures, ideas, and techniques represented in the museum’s special exhibition: The Language of Beauty in African Art. Participants will create lesson plans to be shared on the last day. This program is open to all local educators but especially designed for studio art, language arts, and social studies.

Course Description: The THSCA Convention & Coaching School is THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE ATHLETICS CONFERENCE in the state of Texas. This three-day annual conference offers a wide range of education sessions on both boys and girls sports, athletic administration, as well as health and safety topics, multiple networking opportunities, rules meetings, an on-site job room, an awards banquet, and an astounding array of exhibits. On average the THSCA Convention draws an attendance of over 13,000 coaches, athletic administrators and exhibitors.

Course Description:  Kodály-inspired instruction uses a carefully organized sequence of musical elements and concepts taught through developmentally appropriate song materials and musical activities. Using high-quality traditional folk music as the initial core musical material, Kodály-inspired musician educators engage their students in joyful, sequential, developmentally appropriate, child-centered, and interactive sound-based instruction. Students are guided to discover, articulate, read, write, improvise and create with the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony and form in unison singing, part work, creative activities and instrumental work, while developing skills in movement, listening, memory, inner hearing and conducting.

SMU Orff Schul Certification Training Program: Level I - III

Course Description: Orff Schulwerk is a philosophy of music education, which is based on the work of German composer and music educator Carl Orff and his colleague, Gunild Keetman. During this course, students will explore music through singing, moving, playing unpitched and pitched percussion instruments and recorder, and improvising. Level I students will be introduced to basic Orff techniques, including a study of pentatonic melodies, drone accompaniment, ostinato and elemental forms. Level II students will be introduced to hexatonic and modal melodies, drone and chord accompaniments, and changing meters. Level III students will begin with a review of the diatonic modes, followed by a study of functional harmony. 100% attendance is expected of students who participate in this certification course.
