Castleberry ISD is proud to announce the first annual Family Code Night on Tuesday, November 30th at Castleberry Elementary from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm. This free, come and go event will invite families to experiment with code, compete in challenges, and create online applications. Students need to bring their school issued device to be able to participate in all of the activities. Families will move through three different types of coding activities: robotics, “unplugged” challenges, and code creation stations. As students complete each activity, they will receive a sticker to add to their Family Code Night Challenge Card.
There are several Challenge Card achievements that students can earn. First, if students complete at least one activity out of each of the three categories (Robotics, “Unplugged”, Creative), their challenge card will be entered into a drawing for fabulous door prizes such as lego kits and littleBits Music Inventor Kits. Additionally, certificates will be awarded to students who complete 4 robotics or 4 “unplugged” activities earning them the title of “Robotics Wizard” or “Unplugged Master” respectively. Ambitious students could even collect both!
Finally, in the Creation category, students who work through at least 5 steps to create an Hour-of-Code application will receive a sticker in recognition of their efforts. However, if students complete all 10 steps and acquire a QR code of their final project, they will be awarded a Creative Genius certificate and earn a Drone Flight Pass.
We are thrilled to provide access to Castleberry’s very own fleet of drones at this event! A Drone Flight Pass will guarantee each child the opportunity to pilot a drone through an aerial obstacle course. Students that successfully complete the obstacle course within the time limit will be awarded a Drone Captain License and will be featured on Castleberry ISD social media platforms.
Join us for a Virtual Storytime with children’s book author Josh Funk. Beginning at 6:15 pm in the art room, make your plans to pick up a ticket at the check-in station for you and your family to attend this wonderful opportunity. Josh will read the story, “How to Code a Sandcastle." Josh Funk is a software engineer and author of many books including the How to Code with Pearl and Pascal series. At the conclusion of our virtual storytime, stay and play to build your own sandcastle following coding prompts!
All attendees will be provided with complimentary snacks including hot dogs, nachos, cookies, and lemonade to replenish your brain power as you code the night away! Register your family using the Google Form.
