Everett White, a sixth through eighth grade physical education/athletics teacher and Boys' Athletic Coordinator at Irma Marsh Middle School, is Castleberry ISD’s 2023 Secondary Teacher of the Year. With over 30 years of experience in education, White has made a significant impact on the lives of countless students. As Castleberry ISD’s Secondary Teacher of the Year, White will advance to the regional level where one secondary teacher in Region XI will be named Region XI Secondary Teacher of the Year.
White holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and a Master of Education in Education Administration, both of which he earned from Prairie View Agricultural & Mechanical University (PVAMU). His dedication to pursuing higher education demonstrates his commitment to professional growth and equipping himself with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide the best education to his students.
In his classroom, students experience an engaging and energetic learning environment. White emphasizes discipline, management, and encouragement as essential components for student success. By creating an environment that is both structured and supportive, he fosters an atmosphere of learning and growth where students can reach their full potential. He incorporates innovative teaching methods and activities that make physical education fun and exciting while ensuring lessons are relatable to students' interests and accessible to all. One of his favorite units is on rhythm, a topic he has passionately taught for 33 years.
"Who doesn't want to learn how to dance?" remarks White, who personally choreographs the dance routines for each rhythm unit himself. Through these routines and accompanying music, his students learn rhythm while enjoying the process. He dedicates the month of October to teaching the routine in small segments, culminating in a complete performance that students showcase for teachers and administrators at the end of the month on Halloween. "The music and the repetitiveness of the dance moves allow even my special needs students to learn and perform the steps with enthusiasm and excitement," White explains.
Beyond academics, White emphasizes building strong relationships within his classroom. His commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive community is evident through initiatives like the "2 Words" program, which focuses on character development among student athletes. Through motivational videos and discussions, White encourages students to embrace diversity and collaborate towards shared goals. These efforts not only enhance athletic endeavors but also contribute to personal growth, strengthening relationships among students and nurturing values that benefit the broader community.
Everett White's dedication to education and his students resonates through his contributions to the educational community. Serving as an Athletic Coordinator and Physical Education teacher, he cultivates an environment that promotes growth, inclusivity, and collaboration. Through innovative teaching methods and a focus on relationship-building, White inspires students to excel academically and personally. His impact extends beyond the classroom, molding students into not only skilled athletes but also responsible members of the community.
