Credit By Examination

Credit By Examination

The Texas Education Code (TEC), §28.023, allows students to either accelerate a grade level or earn credit for a course based on credit by examination (CBE).

Students must be enrolled in Castleberry ISD to be eligible for Credit by Exam for acceleration. The tests are available four times per year at no charge to students. A student may only attempt the credit-by-exam assessment for a course or grade-level subject two times. Credit by examination is available during a testing window established by Castleberry ISD during these quarters:

January 1 - March 31 (Request by December 15)
April 1 - June 30 (Request by March 15)
July 1 - September 30 (Request by June 15)
October 1 - December 31.(Request by September 15)

    Grades Kindergarten through Fifth

Elementary students must take exams in Science, Mathematics, Social Studies and Language Arts. Students must demonstrate mastery of 80% or higher on each test to be eligible to take the next test. Students who demonstrate 80% or higher mastery on all four tests will be considered for advancement to the next grade level.

Results will be sent to campus counselors after the scoring is complete. Parents/guardians can obtain the test results directly from the campus counselors.

    Grades Sixth through Twelfth

Secondary students may test through credit by exam to earn credit for a course with no prior formal instruction. Students must demonstrate 80% or higher mastery on the exam. If credit is awarded, the examination score will be recorded on the student’s transcript, computed in the credits toward graduation, and calculated in the student’s overall grade average and rank in class.
