Per the Texas Education Code Sec. 37.109, every school district must establish a School Safety and Security Committee following guidelines from the Texas School Safety Center. This committee’s primary responsibility is to help develop and update emergency operations plans to ensure they meet the needs of each campus and facility within the district.
The committee must include representatives from local emergency management, law enforcement, the school board, the superintendent, school staff (including at least one teacher), and parents of district students.

Develop and implement emergency plans tailored to each campus and facility.
-
Recommend updates to the district’s emergency operations plan, aligning with best practices from the Texas School Safety Center.
-
Support safety and security audits by providing accurate and comprehensive campus information.
-
Review safety reports before submission to the Texas School Safety Center.

The committee must meet at least once each semester and once during the summer.
