Each year school and community leaders join together to renew their commitment to a safe and drug-free community. Laina McDonald, CCDAC Board Member and the Associate Director of Instructional Services in CISD, welcomed guests in attendance and reminded everyone of the history of the Red Ribbon Week Campaign.

The guest speaker for the morning was Evyn Ellis, Prevention Services Coordinator for the Recovery Resource Council. She is a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor and currently works with adolescents and adults seeking to overcome substance abuse issues. Ms. Ellis spoke about the Recovery Resource Council’s local prevention efforts, as well as the importance of positive messages between school aged students.

Red Ribbon week was observed in Castleberry ISD and throughout River Oaks from October 29 - November 2, 2012. The Red Ribbon Campaign brings millions of people together to raise awareness regarding the need for alcohol, tobacco and other drug and violence prevention, early intervention, and treatment services.

A highlight of the breakfast was the recognition of the River Oaks Lions Club Drug Awareness Poster Contest winners. With the help of the Castleberry ISD art teachers, students in grades 3 through 12 participated in the contest where students generated posters based on this year’s theme, the “Dangers and/or Consequences in the Use of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs”.

Red Ribbon Week began after the kidnapping and murder of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena in 1985. The following year the California State PTA adopted the Red Ribbon Campaign. Then, in 1988, Red Ribbon Week was recognized nationally with President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan serving as the Honorary Chairs. It is the largest, most visible prevention awareness campaign observed annually in the United States.

The top three students in each grade level category and their families were invited to the breakfast. Jackie Pena, CCDAC President, presented each with a certificate on behalf of the River Oaks Lions Club. First place winners in each category will move on to the Lions Club Regional contest.
