Searching using Boolean Strategies: using quote marks
Terminology: Boolean Logic
Materials/Equipment:
Instructional Activities:
- Keyboarding Warm-up (maximum of ten minutes)
- Teacher will remind about how using the words AND,
OR and NOT will help get more accurate search results
- Model with students how to use quote marks to
search. (Examples: “Civil War letters” “Civil War photographs” “Civil
War women” “Civil War museums”)
- As you model the searches, open two or three links
and save them to your favorites. (Click Favorites>Add to favorites)
Remind the students that they will only find these favorites on the
computer they are using when they save them.
- Teacher will model how to copy from the Internet
and paste to a Word document. Remind students that they should make a
new citation using Citation Machine each time they visit a website from
which they intend to copy information. They should make sure they
include the information on the Works Cited page made in the previous
lesson and that they note on the Word document where they are
pasting the information also. Save the Word Document as Civil War notes
in their user folder.
- Students will research the Civil War using Google.
Explain that they will be building a newsletter which includes articles
mainly about the causes and effects of the Civil War. Other interesting
information to include could be about Civil War letters, women in the
Civil War, museums about the Civil War and/or photographs or graphics
from the Civil War. Students will research, cite sources, and copy
appropriate information for two more technology lessons.
Modifications: Teacher will create a list of
appropriate sites for students to visit for research.
Assessment: Civil War research saved in their
User Folder
