Bilingual and ESL Students
Teaching Strategies
Castleberry ISD offers several instructional programs for our ELLs
(English Language Learners).
Our Dual Language program promotes bi-literacy by providing instruction
in both Spanish and English. Our English as a Second Language program
provides instruction in English with various activities and strategies to
support second language learners.
All teachers in grades Pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade have either
Bilingual or ESL certification. All teachers in grades six through
twelve receive training in Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocols.
In addition, all staff are given six hours of training, based on assessment
data, to meet the affective linguistic and cognitive needs of the ELL
student.
Tutoring
Through the “Grow Our Own” program, CISD recruits
bilingual High School Students to tutor dual-language learners before
school. During the school year, the High School students read to, and
interact with, elementary students prior to the beginning of the regular
school day three times per week.
