Health Screenings
Acanthosis Nigricans
Acanthosis Nigricans is a skin disorder characterized by
abnormally increased coloration and "velvety" thickening of the skin,
particularly of skin fold regions, such as of the neck and groin and under
the arms. It is believed that this condition is associated with diabetes.
The Acanthosis Nigricans screenings take place in 3rd, 5th and 7th grade.
The screening involves examination of the back of the neck are only.
Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a condition that involves larger spinal
curves, greater than 10 degrees. Scoliosis is most common in young people,
especially girls between the ages of 10 and 16. Scoliosis is most serious in
young children who are still growing. Therefore, screening a child for
scoliosis may be important so that any deformity can be detected early and
treated before it becomes severe. Scoliosis screenings take place in 6th and
9th grades.
Hearing and Vision
Hearing and vision screenings take place at all grade
levels. Referrals for medical treatment will be made if needed.
Pediculosis and Other Scalp Conditions
Pediculosis (lice) screenings are conducted at both the
elementary and the secondary level. If a student is found to have
pediculosis, the student will be sent home until the condition is treated.
The student will only be allowed to return to school if he/she is
“nit-free”.
