Choral Music

Important Date:

Tuesday, December 15:  Holiday Concert!  (time and place TBA)

My name is Daniel Watkins, and I teach choir at Irma Marsh Middle School and Castleberry High School.  I love music, and I love teaching.  My goal is that my students learn to love music, too.

In order to help build well-rounded singers, I focus my teaching along three basic strands:

1)  Singing - The best way to learn to sing well is to sing!  I provide a balanced repertoire of songs and musical pieces from across the centuries and from many different styles.  While learning these songs, singers develop necessary skills in breathing, tone production, tuning, balance, blend, expression, and diction.

2)  Fundamentals - Never let it be said that my singers are not musicians!  I instruct and coach my students in rhythm and pitch notation and reading.  Through this knowledge, students are able to read music at first sight and better interpret songs.

3)  Cultural Connections - In addition to our own music-making, my singers learn the historical background to the songs we sing.  We also listen to and watch great performances from great musicians, knowing that all music helps us understand the world and our own musical selves.  Both vocal and instrumental music, from choral and classical to jazz and rock, offer new perspectives and enrich our lives.

Interested in helping the Castleberry choirs restore the glorious tradition of the past?  Please call Mr. Watkins at (817) 252-2282!
